TEMPEST is a portrait of American demolition derby—an arena of sanctioned chaos, visceral release, and unfiltered human intensity. In this sport, drivers collide in hand-built machines of destruction, where the objective is singular: to be the last vehicle in motion. It is competition as catharsis, destruction as ritual.

Over six years and across twelve states, I have immersed myself in this world, documenting its explosive brutality alongside its fleeting moments of stillness and vulnerability. Raised on the edge of a dirt track in rural Missouri, I now find myself at its center—where impact becomes expression and resilience takes form through wreckage.

TEMPEST is a study of the storms we endure—internal and external. It is about chaos embraced, the remnants we leave behind, and the unexpected beauty discovered in the act of breaking things apart. The project will continue through 2025, culminating in a monograph to be published in 2026.

There is only one degree of
separation between passion
and destruction.
